Yasunidos demands return of signatures delivered in 2014

On May 6th, members of the group Yasunidos visited the National Electoral Council’s (CNE) headquarters with drums in their hands. The aim was to demand the signatures previously handed in on April 12th 2014, intended to spark a public referendum against the exploitation of Yasuní ITT.

These were repealed by the CNE on April 15th as they supposedly found signatures bearing the names of TV caricatures among other anomalies.

Yasunidos handed in 55 files with 757 623 signatures to the CNE, including an additional file with 1,275 ID cards plus photocopies of the 1,426 signature collectors. Lawyer Julio Cesar Trujillo presented a letter of complaint to the CNE secretary, signed by Esperanza Martínez from Acción Ecológica. The CNE took over to determine the validity of the document.

Patricio Chávez, Yasunidos spokesperson, expressed his fear that these signatures may be used for other means. “They never showed us the signatures, and now, what with the accreditation of parties drawing nearer, we do not trust this organization. We do not know in what way they may use our signatures or our voices; for life and for the communities”, he published via his Twitter account.
