This Friday minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen (PvdA) had a conversation with the Native American leader Raoni Metuktire who is visiting The Netherlands. Metuktire is the leader of 5.000 Kayapó Native Americans and he draws attention to the preservation of the Amazon Rainforest and its indigenous population.

Ploumen states in a press release that the trade and investment-opportunities in Amazonia are vast. Dutch companies in the area play a distinct role in the trade of wood, soja and meat. « At the same time the unique Amazon Rainforest should be preserved. Dutch companies should easily be able to combine these 2 factors » Ploumen states.

Ploumen also says The Netherlands has intensified contact with the ngo’s about the indigenous people in Amazonia. The Dutch administration regularly states the rights of the indigenous people in Amazonia to the Brazilian Government.
